My Journey Into Photography: From Hobby to Dream Career

How I Discovered My Passion for Photography

Back in the mid-2000s, those little digital cameras were everywhere, and yes, I had one. I was snapping photos all the time. Once I got to high school, I saved up enough money to buy myself my first "professional" camera. It was just a starter camera, but for me, it was a big deal—a Canon Rebel XS and a 50mm lens. That summer, I took so many photos, from the beaches of Michigan to my parents' backyard.

I remember one photo in particular—it was of my friend walking on the beach in the distance. My settings were just right, capturing the waves washing over the sand and the pebbles with her in the background. That photo was entered in a contest in my little hometown and won first place. My mom still has that photo framed in her home.

Turning a Hobby Into a Photography Business

I started photography as a hobby, but it quickly turned into a way to make a little extra cash. It began with taking my brother's senior photos, and soon, I was photographing all his friends when I came home from college. This was when I realized that photography, was something I truly enjoyed.

Over the years, I taught myself photography. However, I did take one semester in college, thinking I would get my bachelor's degree in it. But I lost confidence in myself and stopped pursuing it academically. I always compared myself to others and felt like I wasn’t good enough.

Taking the Leap: Investing in Myself as a Professional Photographer

I kept up with photography on and off after graduating college, taking paid jobs here and there but never having the confidence to truly invest in myself—until I planned my own wedding. Talking to photographers and getting my own engagement photos taken made me realize that this was something I could try again.

One of my friends had just gotten engaged, so I asked if I could take her photos. I wanted to see if I still had it—the poses, the lighting, everything. The shoot turned out better than I could have hoped for. That was the moment that gave me the confidence to keep going. I love photography—everything from the technique to the editing. Meeting new people and capturing their love stories fills my heart. And having gone through the process myself, I understood what couples were looking for and knew I could be there for them.

Growing My Wedding Photography Business

Since that shoot, I finally invested in myself. I bought two Canon 5D Mark IV cameras, a 35mm and an 85mm prime lens, and, of course, a flash. I've spent countless hours mastering my settings, lighting, and how to prompt the most genuine poses. I now specialize in couples, weddings, families, and branding photography, focusing on capturing authentic moments that tell a unique story.

I'm so happy I finally pushed myself. Actually, I have to thank my husband for the push—he saw my potential when I didn’t. To anyone who is curious about photography, go take some photos, and do the things that scare you. You never know—it might just be the best thing you've ever done.

Photography is a journey, and every step you take brings you closer to mastering your craft.

I still have a long way to go until I reach my goals, but I won’t stop trying and learning. Growth never stops, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
